THE INVITATION
I have spent over a decade centering conversations and practices at the intersection of social justice and yoga.
It began with questions. Why was the yoga industry so exclusive? Who had access to these practices? Who felt welcome? Whose bodies, experiences, and wisdom were centered? And what did it mean to practice yoga while ignoring the systems of oppression shaping our lives and our world?
Those questions became Skill in Action in 2017. They became a second edition in 2021. And in the years between, they became something larger than a book—a body of work built alongside thousands of practitioners, teachers, studio owners, and organizers grappling with how to live their values and engage practice in service of justice.
This membership is where all of it now lives: an on-demand library of Skill in Action practices you can return to whenever you need them, and a community to practice alongside.
WHY NOW
Why Skill in Action now?
We are living through a time of profound uncertainty and transformation. War and genocide. Climate crisis. Racial injustice. Attacks on bodily autonomy and civil rights. Political instability, economic inequity, and tremendous individual and collective grief.
Many of us are overwhelmed by the amount of suffering we witness every day. We find ourselves asking: What can I possibly do? What is mine to do? How do I stay engaged without becoming consumed by despair? How do I remain connected to my humanity, and to the humanity of others?
These are spiritual questions. And they are questions this work has always asked us to engage. Spiritual practice can be more than a place we retreat from the world. Practice can build our capacity to be present to the world as it is while imagining and creating the world as it could be.
Yoga can teach us how to stay.
How to breathe when the conditions around us make it difficult to breathe.
How to notice the conditioning that separates us.
How to interrupt patterns of harm.
How to discern our dharma.
How to act without attachment to the outcome while remaining committed to liberation.
How to remember that none of us are free until all of us are free.
